So; I wound up seeing Fantastic Four on Sunday. Ever since I first heard of the project years ago; I've been waiting and hoping to see it. In the previous years; the scripts were changed many times as were the possible cast, directors, and so on. It seems problems plagued the FF film from the very beginning and sadly; it seems to have translated that to the big screen.
It wasn't terrible and it wasn't necessarily even bad. Ioan Gruffudd did a good Reed Richards. Michael Chiklis was a great choice for Ben Grimm; although I still have to wonder how Ron Perlmann might have handled the role. Jessica Alba looked hot as always, but still disagree with casting her as Susan Storm. Chris Evans apparently really researched the role of Johnny Storm or is naturally that goofy; he did a great job...but didn't really LOOK like Johnny does.
And finally; my favorite character of all time, Victor Von Doom, played by Julian McMahon was terrible, terrible, terrible. To his credit; Julian did a good job...but I think the role was plagued mostly because of the screenwriter. Doom, in this movie, is no longer the mostly benevolent but iron fisted monarch of Latveria. He no longer seems to be the technological genius, inventor, scientist, and even master sorcerer. Instead; Doom in this movie is the CEO of Von Doom Industries which is just fucking ridiculous and seems more concerned about profit and himself than anyone or anything. Yes, I know Doom is a "villain" but he has some twisted sense of honor and justice. WTF was going on with the metal skin? That's ridiculous. And no scarred or disfigured face either. Regarding the helment he put on near the end...it looked similar to the comic, but his costume origin just kind of "happened" in the movie rather than having some kind of story behind it.
And Doom and Sue being together? Or much less working together? I think not. Where was Ben Grimm's old neighborhood of Yancy Street? Where was all of the Aunt Petunia remarks about the "ever lovin' blue-eyed Thing?" Ultimately; I think Johnny Storm was the only one that was really done properly. It's nice they actually engulfed him in flame as the Human Torch too...previously they'd mentioned only doing his hands.
Thinking about the movie pisses me off. Why couldn't they have followed the example of the fantastic Sin City or the amazingly done Batman Begins? As if brutalizing the FF wasn't enough; I KNOW The Duked of Hazzard is going to be flaming poo. But I'll have to see it anyway.
At least War Of The Worlds was cool.

Speaking of that..
My husband disturbed me deeply the other night when he said "How long before they remake 'Smokey and the Bandit', ya think?" - Now I'm really scared they might.

As for Smokey & The Bandit...I hope they never remake it. It wouldn't be the same. But you know; they did talk about something horrific called Smokey & The Bandit 4000...set in fucking outer space with Vince Vaughn in a '77 Trans Am that was decked out like the DeLorean for BTTF. Ridiculous hideous bullshit. I hope it never makes it.

Stiffler as Bo Duke is the wrongest sort of wrong there is. He's ugly. Bo's supposed to be the prettyboy to Luke's brains. I'm very put out by that choice of casting. And Daisy should be a brunette. Seriously.
Smokey and The Bandit is just perfect the way it is. It's classic. They'll never recapture that chemistry with another cast. Or recapture the feel of the times even if they tried to remake it set in the late 70's. I'll throw fits if they mess with it. Pointless fits, but I'll throw them anyway. The way Hollywood likes to redo EVERYTHING these days though, I fear they'll go for that next.
I can't even express my thoughts on something like S&tB 4000 without using excessive profanity. The idea of it is enough to make me ill.

And yeah...Daisy should be the brunette she's supposed to be.
Totally agree with you on the Bandit. That's a timeless classic. How could they ever remake it? And why should they? That's almost as bad as if someone tried to remake Bullitt...no one can pull off Steve McQueen's ass kicking glare and demeanor.
If the 4000 movie ever see's the light of day I'm sending a steaming pile express delivered to everyone involved.

Here's hoping 4000 is just an awful rumor. They should really put some effort into making a new movie with a car as the star. As long as it's american muscle, I won't mind that a bit.
I decided last night, while watching Bandit for the 100000th time (hey, it was on AMC, I HAD to), that when Billy goes back to school this fall, I'm getting a job so I can get me a restored, ready-to-go '77 T/A. It can be a clone, I don't mind. I just want one so bad and it must be black. Well, I have to get my car fixed first, but I WILL get me a Bandit somehow.

I agree though; it'd be cool to have more car movies. I wished they would have made Fury Road (the new Mad Max). And while The Last Ride was a TV movie; I still want to see it for the old school and new school GTOs. Did you ever see The Wraith? That was pretty cool back in the day. Cheeseball movie but cool.
I'm with you on the Bandit. One day. ONE day.

Hmm, a new decent killer car movie would be nice too.
In 10 years when I have the money saved up, hah, I'm going to pester you to help me pick out my T/A. ;-P

The Wraith had Charlie Sheen in it...basically about a guy that gets killed and comes back for revenge. The car is a one-off Dodge Interceptor...very sleek looking but lots of great cars in there.
Hehe...I'd be happy to help. As long as you give me a ride in it. ;)
July 14 2005, 21:49:12 UTC 6 years ago
And yes, you will get to ride it in and probably be the only person besides myself to even drive it. ;-)

While the production scoured the country looking for Chargers, some were almost gifted to them. Everett Barton, 44, of Wichita Kansas, sold them his two General Lee '69 Chargers for a total of two dollars - on agreement that the production would sell them back to him for $1.25 each after they had been used in the film. One of the Chargers was a parts hulk that Barton had bought to support his other General Lee. But the other General Lee was his daily driver."
It doesn't say how many were actually destroyed, but the pictures are enough to break a Mopar lover's heart. One of the jump cars is shown after the jump, and it's totally trashed, though they said they rebuilt it to jump again when that jump came up short. Others have various camera equipment bolted on here and there and there's a picture of another jump car going sideways through the side of a barn.
I can't find decent '69 around here for less than 3k (and that's if it's "restorable" which doesn't mean much)and I've been looking forever. I'm so not thrilled after reading that article, hah.

I glanced at them on ebay last week and found so much overpriced junk. I'm hoping I get lucky and stumble into one a little old lady is selling cheap eventually. Rural Virginia can be sorta good for stuff like that (of course, I'm usually 3 seconds too late finding out about it).
