So; I wound up seeing Fantastic Four on Sunday. Ever since I first heard of the project years ago; I've been waiting and hoping to see it. In the previous years; the scripts were changed many times as were the possible cast, directors, and so on. It seems problems plagued the FF film from the very beginning and sadly; it seems to have translated that to the big screen.

It wasn't terrible and it wasn't necessarily even bad. Ioan Gruffudd did a good Reed Richards. Michael Chiklis was a great choice for Ben Grimm; although I still have to wonder how Ron Perlmann might have handled the role. Jessica Alba looked hot as always, but still disagree with casting her as Susan Storm. Chris Evans apparently really researched the role of Johnny Storm or is naturally that goofy; he did a great job...but didn't really LOOK like Johnny does.

And finally; my favorite character of all time, Victor Von Doom, played by Julian McMahon was terrible, terrible, terrible. To his credit; Julian did a good job...but I think the role was plagued mostly because of the screenwriter. Doom, in this movie, is no longer the mostly benevolent but iron fisted monarch of Latveria. He no longer seems to be the technological genius, inventor, scientist, and even master sorcerer. Instead; Doom in this movie is the CEO of Von Doom Industries which is just fucking ridiculous and seems more concerned about profit and himself than anyone or anything. Yes, I know Doom is a "villain" but he has some twisted sense of honor and justice. WTF was going on with the metal skin? That's ridiculous. And no scarred or disfigured face either. Regarding the helment he put on near the end...it looked similar to the comic, but his costume origin just kind of "happened" in the movie rather than having some kind of story behind it.

And Doom and Sue being together? Or much less working together? I think not. Where was Ben Grimm's old neighborhood of Yancy Street? Where was all of the Aunt Petunia remarks about the "ever lovin' blue-eyed Thing?" Ultimately; I think Johnny Storm was the only one that was really done properly. It's nice they actually engulfed him in flame as the Human Torch too...previously they'd mentioned only doing his hands.

Thinking about the movie pisses me off. Why couldn't they have followed the example of the fantastic Sin City or the amazingly done Batman Begins? As if brutalizing the FF wasn't enough; I KNOW The Duked of Hazzard is going to be flaming poo. But I'll have to see it anyway.

At least War Of The Worlds was cool.

I know "The Dukes of Hazzard" is going to offend my precious childhood memories like nothing else ever has, but I'll see it too. I'm only there to see one orange '69 Charger anyway. It's always been about the General for me. And now Burt Reynolds has appeared with my two favorite cars of all time, so that will help.

Speaking of that..
My husband disturbed me deeply the other night when he said "How long before they remake 'Smokey and the Bandit', ya think?" - Now I'm really scared they might.

Yeah...the General Lee was always one of my favorites. But I'm convinced they're going to make the Duke boys complete dumbasses which they weren't in the TV show. At least Willie Nelson is playing Jesse.

As for Smokey & The Bandit...I hope they never remake it. It wouldn't be the same. But you know; they did talk about something horrific called Smokey & The Bandit 4000...set in fucking outer space with Vince Vaughn in a '77 Trans Am that was decked out like the DeLorean for BTTF. Ridiculous hideous bullshit. I hope it never makes it.

Gah, LJ ate my first reply!

Stiffler as Bo Duke is the wrongest sort of wrong there is. He's ugly. Bo's supposed to be the prettyboy to Luke's brains. I'm very put out by that choice of casting. And Daisy should be a brunette. Seriously.

Smokey and The Bandit is just perfect the way it is. It's classic. They'll never recapture that chemistry with another cast. Or recapture the feel of the times even if they tried to remake it set in the late 70's. I'll throw fits if they mess with it. Pointless fits, but I'll throw them anyway. The way Hollywood likes to redo EVERYTHING these days though, I fear they'll go for that next.

I can't even express my thoughts on something like S&tB 4000 without using excessive profanity. The idea of it is enough to make me ill.

Agreed. That Stiffler dude is good in some things (like The Rundown) but he is no Bo Duke. Paul Walker might have been a better choice. Might. Knoxville I think could pull off Luke pretty well but I'm sure the lines and script they gave him is crap. And I love Burt Reynolds...but as Boss Hogg? I don't think so.

And yeah...Daisy should be the brunette she's supposed to be.

Totally agree with you on the Bandit. That's a timeless classic. How could they ever remake it? And why should they? That's almost as bad as if someone tried to remake Bullitt...no one can pull off Steve McQueen's ass kicking glare and demeanor.

If the 4000 movie ever see's the light of day I'm sending a steaming pile express delivered to everyone involved.

Yeah, I'm with you re: Dukes. I understand maybe they don't want to carbon copy the show, but I don't think the formula of different = better will ever work for something like this. Haha, I mean..let's not forget Coy and Vance, the "other" cousins on the TV series. That worked REAL well, didn't it? ;-P

Here's hoping 4000 is just an awful rumor. They should really put some effort into making a new movie with a car as the star. As long as it's american muscle, I won't mind that a bit.

I decided last night, while watching Bandit for the 100000th time (hey, it was on AMC, I HAD to), that when Billy goes back to school this fall, I'm getting a job so I can get me a restored, ready-to-go '77 T/A. It can be a clone, I don't mind. I just want one so bad and it must be black. Well, I have to get my car fixed first, but I WILL get me a Bandit somehow.

Coy and Vance...Argh. I remember the first time I saw them on there and thought...WTF is this? Real bad idea.

I agree though; it'd be cool to have more car movies. I wished they would have made Fury Road (the new Mad Max). And while The Last Ride was a TV movie; I still want to see it for the old school and new school GTOs. Did you ever see The Wraith? That was pretty cool back in the day. Cheeseball movie but cool.

I'm with you on the Bandit. One day. ONE day.

[info]valkyrii

July 14 2005, 21:27:28 UTC 6 years ago

The Wraith..it sounds so familiar. I think I might have looked at it somewhere, but never actually watched it. I'm still trying to find "The Car" on DvD. It's probably awful now, but I loved it as a kid and I haven't seen it in 20 years at least. Scariest thing I'd ever watched at the age of 6 and totally contributed to my whole car obsession.

Hmm, a new decent killer car movie would be nice too.

In 10 years when I have the money saved up, hah, I'm going to pester you to help me pick out my T/A. ;-P

July 14 2005, 21:31:32 UTC 6 years ago

The Car! That kicked ass! I remember that one...the black Lincoln and it never showed who the driver was although it was supposed to be ol' Scratch himself.

The Wraith had Charlie Sheen in it...basically about a guy that gets killed and comes back for revenge. The car is a one-off Dodge Interceptor...very sleek looking but lots of great cars in there.

Hehe...I'd be happy to help. As long as you give me a ride in it. ;)

[info]valkyrii

July 14 2005, 21:49:12 UTC 6 years ago

Oh, I HAVE seen The Wraith. I think I must have watched it during an extreme ADD moment or something, because I can't remember much at all. Typical for me though.

And yes, you will get to ride it in and probably be the only person besides myself to even drive it. ;-)

July 14 2005, 21:36:36 UTC 6 years ago

The General Lee was the whole reason for watching that show. Which of course is why I bought a '69 Charger :P Although no, I am not going to paint it orange. I had Duke tv trays that I would insist eating all my meals on and a bicycle that was done after the General. And yea...the movie will suck but it will be worth it just in order to see the classic General

[info]ksarikhani

July 14 2005, 21:39:15 UTC 6 years ago

Yeah; I hear ya. I had the TV trays too. It will probably suck but yeah I'm mainly going to see the insane car stunts. And there better be a lot of 'em.

[info]gabriel75

July 14 2005, 21:43:42 UTC 6 years ago

No shit. If there is no more of the General than what they showed in the previews I will be highly pissed off. But at least they didn't use a modernized car to replace it with. I would have boycotted the movie if they had. It just really makes me wince though to think of how many Chargers that were completely destroyed in the making of the movie.

[info]valkyrii

July 14 2005, 21:47:23 UTC 6 years ago

The new issue of Hot Rod has a the story of the movie's Chargers in it. 26 used, though I'm not sure how many destroyed. Some guy sold his two '69's to the movie company for a dollar a piece under the condition that they sell them back to him when they're done.

I don't think I could recreate the face I made after reading that.

[info]gabriel75

July 14 2005, 22:09:15 UTC 6 years ago

My god...that is more than the entire run of the TV series used. And I bet that most if not all are in utterly horrible condition after making the movie. And yea, that guy was out of his damned mind as the cars are almost sure to be unusable after he gets them back. Although on the other hand they will probably be worth tons of money. Personally I never would have done it. They would have to pry my keys from my cold dead fingers.

[info]valkyrii

July 14 2005, 22:21:54 UTC 6 years ago

Quote from the article: "a total of 26 Chargers were used to portray the Duke's flying Dodge during filming. That's 14 '69 Chargers, 8 '68 Chargers and 4 '70 Chargers. That's a lot of Chargers that can't be replaced.

While the production scoured the country looking for Chargers, some were almost gifted to them. Everett Barton, 44, of Wichita Kansas, sold them his two General Lee '69 Chargers for a total of two dollars - on agreement that the production would sell them back to him for $1.25 each after they had been used in the film. One of the Chargers was a parts hulk that Barton had bought to support his other General Lee. But the other General Lee was his daily driver."

It doesn't say how many were actually destroyed, but the pictures are enough to break a Mopar lover's heart. One of the jump cars is shown after the jump, and it's totally trashed, though they said they rebuilt it to jump again when that jump came up short. Others have various camera equipment bolted on here and there and there's a picture of another jump car going sideways through the side of a barn.

I can't find decent '69 around here for less than 3k (and that's if it's "restorable" which doesn't mean much)and I've been looking forever. I'm so not thrilled after reading that article, hah.

[info]gabriel75

Man, I'd probably cry if I saw those pictures, heh. So THOSE bastards are why I havn't been able to find parts for mine at a reasonable price. I mean come on... $1000 per fender on ebay? I've been contemplating actually sending mine to a good home lately since there is no way I can afford to even work on it. And yea, finding a decent charger will be impossible for that price. I got a pretty good deal on mine when I snagged it and paid 4K. The movie made already rare cars and parts even more rare.

26! Those bastards! Chargers are already difficult enough to find in bad condition as it is (as are most Mopars)...and 26 were slaughtered I bet. :(

July 14 2005, 22:29:36 UTC 6 years ago

I can hardly find them at all, for sale at least. The last one I looked at in person was a '69 R/T that the guy had restored, and he was asking 26k for it. He sold it within 3 days. That was 10 years ago. I don't even want to know what he could get for it today.

I glanced at them on ebay last week and found so much overpriced junk. I'm hoping I get lucky and stumble into one a little old lady is selling cheap eventually. Rural Virginia can be sorta good for stuff like that (of course, I'm usually 3 seconds too late finding out about it).

No kidding...I like the new Charger as a modern sedan (but should have used another name) but if they had used it in the new movie that would have been the last straw. Even the new Herbie is still an old school Bug.

[info]gabriel75

July 14 2005, 22:20:02 UTC 6 years ago

I agree they should have called the new Charger something else as it's not in the true spirit of the car. And yea, it would not have been a Duke movie if it didn't have the '69 in it.

I was really iffy on that. I was thinking that they were going to remove it to be PC or some other bulshit. Was glad to see that it was still intact and flying proudly.
